8" FRET LEVELLING KIT OPTION
The 8" fret levelling beam features a solid oak handle and a stainless steel precision formed fret levelling tool.
The tool is purpose designed for use with regular (non-adhesive) 25mm wide abrasive roll. Tab slots keep the abrasive in place during use. This feature enables any abrasive grit of preference to be utilised.
Reloading the abrasive is performed by inserting the strip through the tab slots and pulling taut at each end of the tool. The handle is then re-fitted and the allen screws tightened.
8" UNIVERSAL FRET LEVELLING KIT OPTION
The tool is the same overall size as the standard fret levelling beam and features removeable grips for retaining the abrasive at each end. This allows the tool to be used without the handle and with the strings on the guitar.
This option also includes a string raiser. This is placed as close as possible to the nut. The string tension will need to be slackened when fitting the raiser. The bar is made from stainless steel and curved to a nominal radius. The bar finds its own resting point on the fretboard thus accommodating any radius. The smooth surface of the bar allows the string positions to be altered/grouped and tensioned as required. A thin strip of rubber underneath the bar protects the fretboard and top of the nut.
More information on this option can be found on the spot levelling blog post.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
The manufacturing process includes linishing of the levelling face over a granite surface table (similar to truing the sole of a smoothing plane over abrasive/glass) and flatness is guaranteed through 100% inspection of the tool. The overall tool length is 10" with an effective abrasive length of 8".
ABRASIVE
The tool is supplied with 4 strips each of medium & fine grade emery. The choice of grade will be dependent on fret wear. After levelling the frets in a linear motion, the tool can be drawn sideways over the frets to polish out remaining scratches. Used strips of emery can be retained for different degrees of fret levelling, and polishing work.
FRET LEVELLING PREPARATION
The guitar neck should be set straight before levelling the frets. (A notched straight edge will reference the fretboard and help to maintain uniformity of the frets for levelling).
