TOOL DESIGN
Our guitar notched edge tool is designed to assess only the length of the fretboard that can be deflected. The uppermost frets are excluded because they are beyond the heel/neck joint and are not influenced by truss rod adjustments or string tension. This approach minimizes the number of required notches and, together with the distinctive notch spacing design, enables the tool to be used for various scales within the specified ranges.
SHORT SCALE NOTCHED EDGE RANGE:
TOOL #1) 12.5" - 14.75".
TOOL #2) 14.75" - 17".
TOOL #3) 17" - 20".
SMALL SCALE GUITAR NOTCHED EDGE
TOOL #4) 20-24" (Typically Gretsch, Jackson, Fender Mustang / Jaguar)
The 1st notch on the tool is placed over the 1st or 2nd fret depending on the particular scale of the instrument. The tool doesn't skip over the nut and is suitable for zero fret Instruments.
UNIVERSAL NOTCHED EDGE RANGE 24"-38"
The creative notch spacing design allows each tool to be used for an infinite number of guitar scales within the defined ranges. (See Zero Fret Note Below).
TOOL #5) Guitar/Baritone 24" to 30" - (610mm to 762mm).
TOOL #6) Baritone/Bass 27" to 34" - (685mm to 864mm).
TOOL #7) Bass 30" to 38" - (762mm to 965mm).

Example Tool #5) This tool is compatible with the following popular guitar scales: 24", 24.5", 24.5625", 24.625", 24.75", 24.84", 24.9", 25.0", 25.34", 25.4", 25.5", 26", 26.25", 26.5", 27", and baritone scales up to 30", as well as metric scales from 630mm, 635mm, 640mm, 645mm, 650mm, 660mm, and 670mm up to 762mm.
NOTE - GUITARS WITH ZERO FRET
For shorter scales the universal tool bridges over the nut and may not be suitable for guitars that feature a zero fret due to the extended nut position on the instrument. This applies to the smallest scale quoted on the relevant tool. If in doubt, please contact us with your requirement so that we can confirm suitability of the tool.
POSITIONING ON THE NECK
The positioning on the neck will vary depending on the scale of the instrument.
A double dot mark for position reference is provided.
The dots are nominally positioned at the 12th notch on the tool.
For shorter scales, the tool is used with the dots placed at the 11th fret on the guitar and for longer scales the dots are placed at the 13th fret.
MULTISCALE GUITARS
Multiscale guitars having bass and treble scales within range specified can also be checked.
IN-HOUSE MANUFACTURING
The notched straight edges are machined in-house using carbide tooling and a purpose designed milling fixture.
LINISHING & INSPECTION
The edges are finished by linishing with 400 grit abrasive over a precision surface table.
All tools are checked using a Calibrated Granite Inspection Table Grade 000 & Technicians Precision Straight Edge.
ADDITIONAL FEATURE (20" Tool & Above)
STEADY FOOT – These tools feature a detachable foot designed to prevent tipping, ensuring the notched edge stays stable on the neck during setup and adjustments. Initially, the steady foot should be loosely attached when positioning the notched edge on the neck, then gently tightened with the single screw once the desired resting height is achieved. The steady foot can be utilized whether or not strings are fitted.
