FRET SLOT & PREPARATION

1) The fret should be pre-bent to the radius of the fingerboard.

2) When viewed from above, both fret and tang should be parallel and not twisted.

3) Ensure correct tang/slot fit. The fret tang should fit snugly into the fret slot up to the barbs by moderate thumb/finger pressure only.

With the above satisfied, the frets will be pushed perfectly home!

PRESS DESIGN

Q. "This tool makes the work seem absurdly simple! Do you think by adding a concave "V" shape to the caul ends it would help to ensure seating onto the frets?"

A. "The press design employs kinematic design principles and the flat caul surface ensures that alignment of fret and caul prior to pressing, is a simple task. The inclusion of a groove for this system would introduce an element of misalignment and probably cause the fret to tip over".

  • The fret is located (axially and vertically) in the slot.

  • A yoke guides the caul as it centralises (radially) on the fret crown.

  • Pressure to the caul is applied via the screw and anti-rotation pad.

  • The fret and caul are now physically constrained.

  • Constant pressure and precise control is maintained during pressing.

The flat surface works perfectly and is far easier to clean. The cleaning is important for us as the glue we use sticks very well to metal!"

PRESS SET UP

The bridge height can be easily adjusted to suit the clearance needed.

A rubber pad is placed on the fretboard to protect the instrument.

The bridge is lowered until the caul is at a suitable height for pressing.

The thumb screw on each pillar is hand tightened along with the adjacent allen screw to clamp the bridge in position.

(Once set up, a bridge height change is only required when moving from the neck position to the overbody position).

Please note, this press is not suitable for use with acoustic instruments.

Please see our Universal Guitar Fret Press for fret pressing on acoustic guitars.

The press is also suitable for use with multiscale instruments as there is sufficient space between the pillars for the guitar to be placed at the different angles required for each fret. (The neck locator is not fixed and will find its own position underneath the neck).

For multiscale instruments, the true radius of each fret will differ slightly from the nominal radius of the fretboard. This is only fractional but the radius will become 'flatter' as the fret angle increases. This is easily accommodated by using the next adjacent caul radius size.
